1999 Gala Award
Congratulations to Brian Dennehy, the first man to receive the
Sarah Siddons Award in the more than four-decade history of the esteemed
Chicago acting honor. He received the famous trophy, depicting the
legendary 18th century English actress, at an awards gala Oct. 4th, 1999
co-chaired by Donna Atwater and Beverly Blettner. Currently led by society
president Bill Zane (father of actors Billy and Lisa Zane), the Sarah
Siddons Society has been toasting actresses who appeared on Chicago stages
since the early 1950s. Dennehy was honored for his Tony Award-winning
performance as Willy Loman in the Goodman Theatre's 50th anniversary
production of Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman." Appropriately,
Dennehy received his Sarah Siddons Award from his "Salesman" director,
Robert Falls.
